[ARCHIVED] Voters reject bid to revise City Charter

Voters in the City of Taylor rejected the only citywide ballot question on the August 2, 2016, primary election ballot yesterday by a 55-45 percent margin. All results are unofficial, pending Wayne County approval.

A ballot proposal on revising the City Charter and simultaneously creating a nine-member Charter Commission was defeated by a 2,720-2,262 vote. Turnout was low -- just 12 percent of registered voters participated.

The proposal would have enabled the commission to totally reopen the charter and revise anything in it, pending an eventual vote of the people to approve or deny the changes. The City Charter, created in the 1960s, has never been revised in nearly one-half century. It has been amended on rare occasions.

The great majority of the City's leaders strongly opposed the measure.

The voting for the eight candidates running for the commission became a moot point as soon as the proposal itself was defeated.
