Police, Fire receive Autism 911 Ready Bags from Mimi's Mission

On July 1 Taylor Police and Fire were on hand to receive a donation of “Autism 911 Ready Bags” from Lisa Vilella of Mimi’s Mission. Vilella is the president of the organization.

Mimi’s Mission is a local non-profit organization that helps Downriver families who have a child on the Autism Spectrum. The goal of the organization is to provide assistance for these families with programs and resources that are otherwise not available.

Mimi’s Mission extends programs and assistance to residents with children on the Autism Spectrum who live in the following Downriver communities: Allen Park, Brownstown Charter Township, Ecorse, Flat Rock, Gibraltar, Grosse Ile Township, Huron Charter Township, Lincoln Park, Melvindale, River Rouge, Riverview, Rockwood, Romulus, Southgate, Taylor, Trenton, Woodhaven, and Wyandotte.

The donations were provided by Fritz Enterprises and Sloan Environmental Services.

The bags are designed to be used by fire and rescue, EMS and law enforcement agencies when they encounter an autistic child or adult during an emergency situation (click here to watch video).

The content of these bags were designed to include specific items that may help reduce stress and anxiety of an autistic person. For this reason, 911 Ready Bags may also be of great use to teachers, parents and many others.

The bags include a number of items: Weighted blanket, noise reducing headphones, “squishies,” sensory noodle, snacks and water. They are all provided in a drawstring bag.

This Mimi’s Mission is a charitable organization; it is always seeking sponsors for its ready bag program. Each bag costs $40. Groups wishing to make a donation can do so by filling out the form on the Mimi’s Mission website.
